SERMON ON THE MOUNT
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’
34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.
36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.
37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.
40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.
41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.
42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Verse 33 to 37, Lord was referring to oaths. Pharisees have found new ways to make swear by manipulative means as referred to in Matthew 23. In the portion, Lord was telling the disciples not to swear at all neither by heaven nor by earth neither by Jerusalem nor by your own head. But let your communication be yea yea or Nay Nay. Simply it means speak always the truth.
Eph 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.
Verses 38 to 42: Here the Lord was saying what the Law in the old testament is saying and what Lord want His disciples to follow in their lives in the new testament.
39: Resist not evil but suffer personal violence
40: if anybody sues at the law Personal property loosing
41: if anybody forces to go a mile, go for two miles
42: Turn not away if anybody wants to borrow from you.
In all these things a believer is supposed to show love towards those who act violently, rob, force, and borrow to take undue advantage.
Lord showed the example while he was on the cross Luke 23: 34, Then Said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment and cast lots. The Lord showed in His Love what He has preached in the above verses. Isaiah 50: 6, I gave my back to the smiters….shame, and spitting.
Luke 9: 51-55, Here when the Lord was not received by Samaritans, his disciples want to call for fire to destroy the Samaritans, but the Lord said you know not what manner of spirit you are of. For the son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.
Gal 6:17, Paul’s testimony in one sentence to fulfilling the above verses Rom 12: 14,17,19 and 20, If someone persecuting in return blesses them
