The Holy Spirit Working Unanimity In The Church (Page 3)

Paul writing to Romans, Corinthians, and Ephesians brought to the attention of believers that Jesus Christ is the Head of the body, and believers are members of the body. These members are united by the Holy Spirit in Baptism to function as one body.

Members also united with the Head Jesus Christ by the same Spirit to function under His authority as we read in 1 Cori 12: 12-13. The members listen to the Head and show obedience to the guidance of the Spirit.

Believing Jews (of Antioch and Jerusalem), a section of Pharisees with different views about Gentiles, Apostles who addressed the meeting, Paul and Barnabas who worked among the Gentiles, and some Gentile believers from Antioch, arrived at a united decision guided by the same Holy Spirit. All disputes and arguments disappeared.

This was the practice of the early Church in making decisions in matters which were not known to them. The decisions were not taken by majority but by unanimity. The Holy Spirit communicated the heart of the Father and the Son to those patiently waiting and eager to obey the authority of His Headship. “Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide YOU into all the truth…”(John 16:13). This is the promise of the Lord to all those who are sincerely desirous of doing His will.

The word YOU in the quoted verse is used in a plural sense. It is not individual but more of a gathering or a group of sincere hearts who are seeking the truth. This is not possible in practice unless those who are seeking the will of God have the experience of the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. When the believers have the experience of hearing His voice and doing His will habitually, they will also be led by the same Spirit to say, “It seemed good unto the Holy Spirit and to us” The precious experience of the Holy Spirit dwelling in us to teach His will, will lead us into the experience of “dwelleth with YOU (John 14:17).
