Matthew 5:17-20

Matthew 5:17-20

SERMON ON THE MOUNT

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Rom 8:3-4, Our Lord has fulfilled the righteousness and it may be fulfilled in us also by condemning the sin in the flesh.

Rom 13:8-10, loving thy neighbor as thyself is fulfilling the law, because He loved the world and died for us. He fulfilled the law.

In Verse 19, Lord is talking about two classes people  one who teaches law but do not do, other class of people who teach and practice.

Matthew 23: 1-3, Lord mentions that Scribes and Pharisees do teach but not do. Thus their lives are showing double standards.  We must not do the same way as scribes and pharisees.

Righteousness: DIKAIOSYONE (Divine approval)

Luke 18: 9-14      showing the condition of a tax collector and how he was convicted in his heart. Lord says he was justified because he pleaded for the mercy of the Lord.  When he pleaded for the mercy, he confesses only Lord’s propitiation will make him justified.

Matthew 23:23 Showing the righteousness of pharisees.

David how he came to the Lord for justification in Psalm 51: 17,

Paul explains about his righteousness according to the law and also according to the new testament based on Lord’s work and His mercy in Philip 3: 1-10
