Baptism In Spirit

Baptism In Spirit

Devotional #6

And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Acts 2:3, And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2: 4

In the previous verse, we see that the Spirit came and filled the room and in verse 3, there is another description of Spirit which is Fire. There are three mighty elements in nature namely Wind, Water, and Fire. Fire is the most powerful of all these three.

John the Baptist said “ I indeed Baptize you with water unto repentance: but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; He shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire (Matthew 3:11, Luke 3:16). The Lord confirmed John’s testimony when He told his disciples after his resurrection that they will receive power, and the Holy Spirit will come upon them (Acts 1:8).

When Holy Spirit descended on the believers gathered in the room He filled the room and sat on each one of them like a fire. Fire a symbol of power has two functions one, it works inside the person on whom he comes, and secondly, uses the person with power to fulfill His mission.

After the first man Adam sinned, the soulical life (natural man) has taken the ascendency in him, and ever since every man functioned under the influence of the soul except Jesus Christ.

God is Spirit and He wants man to be with him in eternity in glory. Man needs to be changed to Spirit lead being to be compatible to live in the presence of God. Man requires a more powerful element at work like Fire which consumes all chaff inside the man, to be transformed to fulfill the plan of God.

When man’s efforts and law in the Old Testament failed to make man be fit for the presence of God. God in His grace not only redeemed man but also gave the gift of the Holy Spirit who works in his inward nature powerfully.
Man is given Holy Spirit which works like Fire, to bring the soul under the subjection of spirit to listen to God and do God’s will.

Then only man will see Spirit ascendant life in him. Fire symbolizes this whole act of transformation and it is also called sanctification.

We read, in” Rom 15:16, That I … the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost” and in “2 Thess 2:13, But we are … God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth”.
