SERMON ON THE MOUNT
31 “It has been said, ‘Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Deut 24:1-2, Scribes were teaching based on this verse which was in the old testament. Matthew 19:3
Pharisees tempting the Lord asking is it lawful for a man to put away his wife. The Lord’s answer is found in 4-9, The Lord did not allow divorcement for every cause except for the cause of fornication.
Deut 22: 13-22, where it is explained if wife had committed fornication there is no divorcement but separation form her husband and later it is stoning her to death. If a man be found lying with a woman married to husband, then they shall both of them die.
John 8:2-11. Here we see though woman found in the act of adultery, Lord did not condemn her but said sin no more. Where the old testament law leaving the man who was involved in adultery but wanted to stone the woman to death.
John 18:31 The jews therefore said unto him it is not lawful for us to put any man to death. So they cannot put the woman also to death.
In the New testament it is not fear of stoned to death but any unholy union is defiling the relationship between the believer who committed the act of fornication and Lord.
1Cor 7: 8 we see here that the wife should not depart from her husband, opposite to husband giving divorce to wife. If she departed, she should not remarry.
